Statement from Chairman Joe L. Reed on the 55th Anniversary of the Death of Dr. Martin Luther King
55 Years ago, we lost the most eloquent voice for justice and equality in the world when Dr. Martin Luther King was assassinated. He gave his life for the cause of freedom and dignity. Like Moses, he went to the Mountaintop, Looked over, but as he said, he didn’t get to the promise land. America and the World were cheated out of a spokesman who believed in what he said and said what he believed. The right to vote is being threatened, undermined, and weakened, and in too many cases lost.
We cannot let the naysayers and the plotters of injustice and some and some members of the Republican Party shut the door on voting rights. One of the best reconditions we can give to Dr. King’s sacrifice if everybody exercises the Right to Vote. No prefixes no suffixes no excuses. Vote. Vote. Vote.
The Alabama Democratic Conference shall forever strive to fulfill the American Dream that Dr. King fought for and believed in. His dream must live on.
